While most foodstuffs saw price increases This year, some fruits such as passion fruit and papaya became cheaper. According to the IPS (Supermarket Price Index), passion fruit had the biggest deflation in February, with 30.86% compared to January.
Still in this subcategory of fresh products, papaya has already accumulated a reduction of 23.18% in the last 12 months, being the only item in this basket with continuous drops registered in the last year.
The price index is calculated by Apas (Associação Paulista de Supermercados) in partnership with Fipe (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas).
“Although adverse weather conditions impact the prices of fresh products,
the deflation presented by passion fruit and papaya was a positive highlight in the index of
fruits in the last month”, says Felipe Queiroz, chief economist at Apas.
According to the country’s official inflation, the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index), in February the food and beverage group increased 0.95%. In food at home, the increase was 1.12%, influenced by price increases for onions (7.37%), potatoes (6.79%), fruits (3.74%), rice (3.69%) and long-life milk (3.49%).
The price of passion fruit is R$6.85 per kilo, according to a quote from Ceagesp (Companhia de Entrepostos e Armazéns Gerais de São Paulo), and papaya formosa is R$4.86 per kilo.
