Executive producer Shonda Rhimes spoke about the possibility of a second season for “Queen Charlotte”, the “Bridgerton” spin-off.

When it comes to streaming platforms, few manage to be at the level of what is still the market giant: Netflix. Thanks to a very varied offer of films and series, the platform has reached a level where any of its productions causes a lot of buzz.

Among Netflix’s most successful productions are true phenomena such as “Stranger Things”, “Wednesday” and more recently, “Baby Reindeer”. The platform is also the owner of the beloved “Bridgerton” universe, the first part of the third season of which will premiere on May 16th.

In addition to the three main seasons, “Bridgerton” received a 6-episode miniseries in 2023 centered on Queen Charlotte’s (India Amarteifio) rise to power and her position as an influential figure. Presented as a prequel to the “Bridgerton” universe, “Queen Charlotte” reveals how the young Queen’s marriage to King George (Corey Mylchreest) gave rise to a great love story and a change in society, paving the way for creation of the world inherited by the characters of “Bridgerton”.

With 95% approval from critics and 73% from the public on Rotten Tomatoes, “Queen Charlotte” once again fell in love with viewers and continued the great triumph of the “Bridgerton” universe on Netflix. As such, many have been wondering whether it will get a second season. Now, executive producer Shonda Rhimes has offered her opinion on the matter.

When questioned by Variety Regarding the possibility of a second season, Shonda Rhimes revealed that it is something that Netflix has asked her about repeatedly and that she is still figuring out, because “I don’t want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told – you know what I mean? I don’t want to do a second season of ‘Queen Charlotte,’ and have people be like, ‘Well, that wasn’t that good.'”

Previously, Tom Vernica, the director of the miniseries, had commented on the subject in an interview with TVLine“I believe there are always many possibilities with these rich characters to open up this world (…) I don’t know if it would be with George and Charlotte because we’ve already seen everything and how they organized themselves and we know where it’s all going.”

Instead of a return of “Queen Charlotte”, Vernica believes that the future of the “Bridgerton” saga involves exploring Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh/Arsema Thomas). For Vernica, both actresses are incredible and it’s a character that has won people over, showing that there is a lot of desire to delve deeper into her journey, ‘I believe that myself and the fans would love to explore this character a little deeper and spend some time in your world’”.
