A couple living in Texas became a TikTok star, but not for the noblest of reasons. Scott and Divine are attacked daily on the social network by followers who do not understand how such an ugly man can be married to such a “nice” woman, as almost everyone wonders. And they point out the most varied reasons for this – never love. The couple, who were initially disturbed by the situation, today use the criticism they face as a way of fighting cyberbullying.
In 2017, Scott Smith realized he had a message on his Messenger, from Facebook, in that box where messages from people who are not friends fall into. He opened it and realized that it was from a woman from the Philippines called Divine Rapsing and that she was talking to him as if she knew him. He replied that she must be wrong, and that he was not the person she wanted to contact. But that was just the beginning of a love story. Earlier that year, a few months after they had met on Facebook, Scott went to the Philippines to meet Divine. They started a romantic relationship, which remained essentially online. In 2021, Divine moved permanently to Texas and married Scott.
So far, it’s just a pretty love story. But when the relationship went to social networks, things got complicated. Scott’s TikTok account suddenly skyrocketed and the man was followed by thousands of people. But for the worst reasons. It’s just that the majority only followed him to spew hatred in the comments about the fact that he was “too ugly” for a woman “so good” (or “too hot”, in English). And almost all the comments revolved around this. At first, Scott suffered a lot from this. A lot of people insinuated that she just wanted his money, that she just wanted to be married to him to get American nationality. and being able to live in the United States, that when he went to work she would betray him, and all this hurt the man. But over time he was getting vaccinated. “It’s the same thing over and over again. So it doesn’t affect me at all,” he said, quoted by the Daily Mail. The same happened with Divine, who didn’t like the way she was seen on social media by the community, but then she got used to it.
The couple even made a video in which they presented the most absurd questions they have ever been asked such as “Are you a real couple or is this all a facade?”, “Are you sexually active?” or “Has your wife ever washed her hair?” But they also spoke of many hateful messages from followers, who say things like “‘Don’t be fooled, she’s much older than you think”, “I doubt she’ll be faithful to you when you’re working”“She’s using you and it’s sad that you don’t understand”.
And why all this bullying? Because Scott, at age 13, had a chronic autoimmune disease called Scleroderma. This ended up stunting his growth, leaving him with almost no muscle mass, too thin, with a very blown-up face and a strange appearance. And she never recovered. For many people, he is “too ugly”, for himself and for Divine, he is just “a normal man”.
The couple has taken advantage of this situation to start promoting messages of love and fighting the cyberbullying they are targeting. With their example, and talking about the way they manage the problem, they try to help people who are also targets of hate attacks on the internet.
