Previous studies of common genetic variation have determined that certain genes related to cytoskeleton – the structure of cells – and the formation of microtubules – part of mitosis – may be related to left-handedness. However, in the study now published by Nature Communications the team led by Clyde Francks, from Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Netherlands), sought rare genetic variants . These occur with a frequency of less than 1% in the population.
