O Former President of Russia and current vice-president of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, commented on Saturday on the possibility of the United States transferring seized Russian assets to Ukraine, warning that Moscow could respond with the confiscation of properties and money from US citizens and investors.

In a publication on the Telegram platform, the senior Russian official stated that the Russia “would not be able to give a completely symmetrical response” to the US’ “blatant theft”.

“The reason is clear – we do not have a significant amount of US state assets, including US money, rights and other assets. Therefore, the answer can only be asymmetric. It is not a fact that it will be less painful“, he warned.

“We are talking about foreclosure, for example, by court decision, on the property of individuals located in the jurisdiction of Russia (money, real estate and movable property in kind, property rights)”he explained, acknowledging that it was “a complex story, since these individuals normally acted as investors in the Russian economy”.

“And we guaranteed them the inviolability of their private property rights. But the unexpected happened – their state declared a hybrid war on us. This must be responded to,” he added.

Medvedev’s warning comes days after the United States House of Representatives approved an aid package for Ukraine, worth 61 billion dollars (57 billion euros), to face the Russian invasion. The legislative package also includes a measure for the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine.

At the end of last year, the United States presented a plan to the G7 to confiscate 300 billion dollars (270 billion euros) in Russian assets.

However, the transfer of these assets to Ukraine is far from complete due, according to the West, to legal and geopolitical obstacles.
