According to the Irish Government, 80% of recent arrivals of illegal aliens are made through the land border, opened under the 1998 peace agreement, between the British province of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Questioned in an interview broadcast today on Sky News, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke of the deterrent effect of the law, approved this week, which should allow the United Kingdom to soon deport migrants to Rwanda.

Rishi Sunak’s Government is relying on this new law, which classifies Rwanda as a safe country, to try to reduce the arrival of migrants and “stop the boats” in the English Channel, where five people lost their lives this week. Human rights organizations, including the United Nations (UN), have already expressed their concern.

According to the Irish public media outlet RTE, citing a spokesman for the Prime Minister, Simon Harris (centrist), the government official has asked his Minister of Justice to present proposals next week to change the current law on the designation of safe third countries. and allow the return to the United Kingdom of applicants who are not eligible for international protection.

This is “one measure among many others that we are taking to strengthen our system and ensure that it is strong, efficient and agile”, said the spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, the head of the Irish Government “does not comment on the migration policy of another country”, but highlights “the importance of protecting the integrity of the migration system in Ireland”.

The country of five million inhabitants, a member of the European Union, has faced increasing tensions over the accommodation of migrants in recent months, with an increase in hostile demonstrations, sometimes punctuated by incidents.

On RTE, Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee — responsible for home affairs — revealed on Saturday that she would discuss the return of migrants to the United Kingdom with British Home Secretary James Cleverly during a visit to London on Monday.

“What is clear from the decision that the United Kingdom took in choosing Brexit is that it is seeing an increase in asylum seekers in its country,” he declared.

The minister also said that her concern as Minister of Justice is to guarantee “an effective immigration system and structures”.

“That’s why I will be bringing forward emergency legislation this week, to ensure we can actually effectively return people to the UK,” he added.
