Continental fined 100 million euros for involvement in Dieselgate

Continental was fined 107 million dollars (around 100 million euros) for failing to prevent its employees from participating in the controversial Dieselgate.

Continental was fined 100 million euros for allowing the sale of more than 12 million engine tuning units that car manufacturers, including the Volkswagen Group, used to manipulate emissions.

This fine comes as Continental was unable to prevent its employees from participating in the controversial Dieselgate. According to German regulators, the implemented software, at least in part, contained illegal strategies.

The illicit software ended up causing vehicles equipped with it to emit more nitrogen oxides during normal driving than permitted by regulatory requirements.

The Hanover Public Prosecutor's Office said, adding that Continental negligently breached its duties but largely cooperated with the investigation.

As reported by the press, Continental declared that it accepted the fine after “intense conversations” with Hanover prosecutors and decided not to contest the decision. The fine includes the seizure of 95 million euros in profits made by the company from the sale of components.

The criminal investigation against around 40 people linked to Continental will continue in Hanover, forming part of a series of scandals and problems that have involved the automotive supplier in recent years.
