UA 36-year-old man died following a heart attack on April 15, four months after being fired from the New York City Fire Department in the United States, leaving his family to struggle to maintain their House.

According to the New York Post, Derek Floyd had been fired as part of the city’s effort to deal with the migrant crisis. The plan was to reduce that Fire Department’s budget by 74 million dollars (more than 79 million euros) by the end of the year, to make way for other expenses.

The firefighter was one of about 10 who were laid off weeks before Christmas. These had been injured, were doing office work or had been ill for a prolonged period.

Floyd, who served three missions in the Middle East as a Marine, was among the firefighters working as a secretary, having suffered another heart attack in 2019. However, the man was trying to obtain medical clearance to rejoin the fire department. , shortly before being fired.

When he died, the family was left with nothing, despite the firefighter’s years of service. “I wouldn’t wish this on anyone,” said Floyd’s widow, Cristine, 34, who is the mother of the firefighter’s two children.

After Floyd was fired, he found a job with a nonprofit that helps veterans, but the pay wasn’t enough.

Cristine says that “the situation is very bad”. “If Derek had stayed [nos bombeiros], I would have life insurance (…) That would have helped financially because, at the moment, the situation is very bad. Honestly, I’m swimming in a lot of debt”, he lamented.

The New York Post writes that it is not certain how many employees will be laid off, but that there are between 800 and 1,000 people designated for this purpose at any given time. In addition to the Fire Department, the New York Police Department will also suffer cuts to its budget.

Andrew Ansbro, of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, lamented the situation. “What disturbs me most is the fact that the New York City Fire Department has hundreds of fewer firefighters. The layoff of [Floyd] It was absolutely unnecessary.”

“I had an important job. He was fired so the department could prove he was making cuts. He deserved more,” he concluded.

Firefighters assured that they will “explore all options” to “help Floyd’s family”, but the municipality is not making any comment.
