A The Duchess of Edinburgh is the first member of the British royal family to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022.
Sophie’s trip aims to “demonstrate solidarity with the women, men and children affected by war”, according to Buckingham Palace in a statement.
The duchess, on behalf of the Crown, visited the site of a mass grave in the city of Bucha, where the victims of the Russian occupation massacre were buried, and also laid flowers at the monument in memory of those who lost their lives there.
After this moment, Sophie met with a group of children from the Save Ukrain association, in the city of Irpin, and also met with the Ukrainian first lady, Olena Zelenska.
