Bo the news! Researchers at the University of Warwick, in the United Kingdom, are developing a new way of identifying skin cancer. As? Thanks to ‘Terahertz (THz)’ waves that are “between infrared (used in remote controls) and microwaves in the electromagnetic spectrum”, explain the scientists, quoted in the BBC.

Basically, these waves can begin to “be used in exams to map the extent of tumors with greater accuracy.”

Clinical trials are already being carried out and scientists hope to be able to speed up diagnosis and thus help surgeons have the ability to remove this type of cancer, leaving as much healthy skin as possible.

Emma MacPherson, one of the researchers involved in the project, explains that these waves “have frequencies a million times lower than those of X-rays”, meaning they are considered “safe and very sensitive to subtle changes in water concentration”. In case you didn’t know, in “skin cancers, the amount of water in the skin is different compared to the healthy skin surrounding it,” she adds.

Theoretically “a machine producing THz waves could be used to map the extent of any skin cancer with great precision.” This can help doctors more easily diagnose the problem and accurately identify the affected area.
