A United States Air Force is preparing new charges against Portuguese descendant Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, accused of improper disclosure of classified information.

The decision comes about two months after the 22-year-old accepted a 16-year prison sentence for revealing US national defense secrets, pleading guilty to six counts of “intentional retention and transmission of classified information “. In exchange, prosecutors agreed not to try him on additional charges under the Espionage Act.

Now, according to an Air Force spokesperson, Teixeira will be the target of military criminal proceedings for alleged violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

“Following close coordination with the Department of Justice, the Air Force determined that separate and distinct charges should be filed against A1C Jack Teixeira for alleged misconduct related to his military duties.”the spokesperson said in statements to the American station ABC News, adding that the charges include failing to obey a lawful order and obstructing justice.

In the first accusation, the Air Force alleges that Teixeira disobeyed an order “to cease and desist accessing information not pertaining to his duties”.

In the second, he accuses the Portuguese descendant of having disposed of an iPad, a computer hard drive and a cell phone “with intent to obstruct the due administration of justice in the case of himself, against whom the defendant had reason to believe there was or would be criminal proceedings pending.”

The Air Force further alleged that Teixeira instructed another individual to delete Discord messages he had sent “with intent to obstruct the due administration of justice in his own case”, on or about April 7, 2023.

The hearing is scheduled for May 14 at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts.

It should be noted that the information leaks caused the Pentagon to reinforce the means to safeguard confidential information and carry out disciplinary measures against members who, intentionally, did not take the necessary measures in relation to Teixeira’s suspicious behavior.

The Portuguese descendant admitted to having illegally collected military secrets and sharing them with other users on Discord, a social media platform popular among people who play online games.

Teixeira, who was part of the 102nd Information Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts, worked as a cyber transportation systems specialist. He was an information technology specialist responsible for military communications networks.

The leak exposed to the world secret assessments about Russia’s war in Ukraine, the geopolitical capabilities and interests of other nations, and other national security issues.
