The start of construction was announced on April 25th. American authorities say this pier will come into operation early this month.

“As of today, we are more than 50% complete with the dock installation,” Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters.

Faced with the Israeli blockade of land aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, which is experiencing a serious humanitarian crisis, American President Joe Biden announced in early March the construction of an artificial port. This week, the Pentagon said the work would cost at least $320 million.

A U.S. official said last week that the territory’s entire population of 2.2 million people faces some degree of food insecurity.

War broke out on October 7 when Hamas commandos killed 1,170 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped about 250 in southern Israel, according to an AFP count based on Israeli statistics.

Israeli authorities estimate that 129 people remain in captivity in Gaza, of which 34 have died.

Israel launched a retaliatory offensive against Hamas, which has left 34,568 dead, most of them civilians, according to the Ministry of Health in the territory governed by Hamas.
