The 36-year-old man who on Tuesday killed a teenager in London with a sword and injured four other people was placed in pre-trial detention after appearing in court.

With Spanish and Brazilian nationality, Marcus Arduini Monzo was accused of murder, attempted murder and injuries following the attack recorded in the east of the British capital.

In court, Marcus Arduini Monzo spoke slowly to confirm his name and is expected to appear before a judge again in the coming days.

Armed with a sword, the accused injured four people and killed a 14-year-old student who was heading to school, having been detained approximately 20 minutes after the first call to the police.

The first alert came after witnesses saw a van crash into a fence in front of a house near the Hainault metro station.

Monzo then got out of his vehicle, threatened a man who was going to kill him and ended up wounding him in the neck.

The prosecutor told the court today that, 15 minutes later, the attacker burst into one where a couple and their four-year-old daughter were sleeping. The accused attacked the child’s father, shouting that he believed in God and causing injuries to his neck and arm, the same source added.

The man then ran after Daniel Anjorin, 14, who was on his way to secondary school, cutting his neck and stabbing him in the chest.

The student, described as a scholar and a good friend by the Bancroft school, died from the injuries he suffered and shortly after being taken to hospital.

Two police officers were seriously injured. A female police officer had to undergo manual surgery.

Marcus Arduini Monzo was not mentioned by the police, who ruled out terrorism as a possible motive.
