O fire that destroyed an apartment complex and caused ten deaths, on February 22, in Valencia, Spain, had as its “sole and main” origin the refrigerator in apartment number 86, on the eighth floor of the building, according to a report from National Police.
The document, to which the Spanish press had access, states that “everything seems to indicate that there may have been an incident at the rear of the refrigerator”.
Over the past few weeks, investigators have examined the site and the building’s electrical installations, which were not destroyed, “without apparently discovering any signs of short circuits or malfunctions.”
The report further determined that the cause of the fire was accidental.
It is recalled that the large fire broke out in a 14-storey building located in a residential area of Valencia. The flames spread quickly and the residential building was destroyed. In total, 10 people died, including a family made up of a couple and two babies.
Last month, the owners of the apartments in the building filed a complaint in court against the construction company, accusing it of a crime of “damage due to serious recklessness”.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the owners asked for cases that were archived by the investigating judge to be reopened, after the Spanish Judicial Police ruled out criminal origins in the fire that fatally killed ten people.
In the complaint, the victims’ lawyer points out the “commitment of an alleged crime of damage due to serious imprudence, in relation to possible negligence on the part of the construction company”, which may have been “key to the spread and consequences of the fire”.
