The new warning from the United Nations (UN) nuclear agency comes after its experts heard, last Tuesday, during an inspection, “more than a hundred shots fired in the vicinity” of the plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) denounced “almost daily” military activities in the vicinity of the Zaporijia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, again warning of their danger to the integrity of the installations.

The new warning from the United Nations (UN) nuclear agency comes after its experts heard, last Tuesday, during an inspection, “more than a hundred shots fired in the vicinity” of the plant.

“On three occasions, within the space of an hour, on Tuesday afternoon, the IAEA team at ZNPP heard a total of more than 100 assault rifle shots,” says the agency’s note.

The IAEA received from the Russian authorities that control the center information that Russian forces are fighting a unit of Ukrainian drone operators and that the shots heard on Tuesday were fired by Russian troops to shoot down a device that was flying over the building of the central technical training center.

“AEIA experts saw no evidence of ‘drones’ on the perimeter of the installation,” said the agency’s general director, Rafael Mariano Grossi, in a statement reporting this week’s events, cited by Europa Press.

“This latest military activity at the plant reveals a persistently unstable situation that poses important challenges to nuclear safety and the protection of this important nuclear plant”, warns the agency’s director general.
