The art and culture of Lagoa da Canoa conquered Brazil and the world through dramaturgy. A wooden sculpture produced by artists from Canoa gained prominence on the set of the soap opera Rancho Fundo, shown daily from 6pm on Rede Globo.

This is the piece Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, sculpted by the children of Antônio de Dedé, one of the greatest artists in the history of Lagoa da Canoa, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 63, but who left a great legacy and contribution to Alagoas culture, with pieces spread across important art galleries in Brazil and around the world.

Antônio de Dedé left his vision and technique alive in 9 of his 10 children, popularly known as “Children of Antônio de Dedé”, who learned from their father to use wood carving tools with sculptures measuring from 50cm to 2m tall. Each one developed their own paths with traits that were always faithful to those taught by their father and master. The family’s work sometimes involves sacred references, sometimes reproductions of what was discussed. With strong expressions and contrasting colors, the work impresses not only due to the size of the sculptures, but mainly due to the message implicit in their lines.

The talent of the family and Canoan artists in general has received important incentives from the current management, which has spared no effort to further strengthen local culture and art.

“It is an immense pride to know that, once again, we have the culture of Lagoa da Canoa highlighted in the world thanks to these spectacular works by our artisans, sons of the late Antônio Dedé”, said Mayor Tainá Veiga, proudly.
