A The word Wi-Fi is one of those terms present in all of our daily lives, but have you ever wondered what it means? You may think that the term originates from some technical expression or word, but, as the That’s Pretty Cool page notes in one of its most recent TikTok videos, the truth is that the word is not related to any technical aspect.

Apparently, the term Wi-Fi just means ‘wireless fidelity’ and originates from the term Hi-Fi used in high-fidelity sound equipment. The term was created in 1999 by a marketing company Interbrand, which explains that it was necessary to find a more ‘attractive’ name taking into account that the technical term was IEEE 802.1.

“The name had to be memorable – something universal that you could find in your home, office, cafe, public space and something that could help consumers understand the concept intuitively”writes Interbrand on the official website. “The name reflects that, even without cables, Wi-Fi offers a high-quality connection wherever you are”.

The explanation offered by this TikTok video seems to have surprised internet users, who made their surprise clear in the comments. “I always thought that [Wi-Fi] meant wireless fiber Internet”writes one of the internet users.
