The plant will be located in Vila do Conde. The renewable gas produced here will then be injected into the national natural gas network.

It was in 1976 that José Moreira Azevedo Teixeira entered the milk business. With just 10 cows, he filled a jug of milk a day. The business grew and after more than 20 years, his sons (José Luís and Jorge) joined their father in management, thus creating Exploração Agrícola Teixeira do Batel, in Gilhabreu, municipality of Vila do Conde, district of Porto.

In 2002, the company made an investment to install a milking parlor with 40 points; More recently, an investment was made to build a ship with eight milking robots. The farm has 2,700 animals, including more than a thousand cows producing milk, for a total of more than 1.1 million liters per month.

And it will be precisely the waste produced by these animals that will give rise to an investment of eight million euros. The Swiss at Axpo will build and operate a biomethane plant in Portugal, precisely in this location.

The production of this renewable gas will then be purchased by the supplier Goldenergy to inject into the national natural gas network.

Per year, the company expects to produce 15 GWh of carbon-neutral gas.

“With this plant we begin our debut in the Biomethane in Portugal and reinforce our leadership position in the renewable sector with a new contribution from Axpo to environmental sustainability. With transformation into Biomethanewe achieved the complete transformation of this waste into energy, which can also be consumed directly on the exploration itself or injected into the gas network”, said Ignacio Soneira, CEO of Axpo, in a statement.

Miguel Checa, CEO of Goldenergy, said that his company “has every interest in buying from AXPO, the biomethane produced by the production plant, in order to start injecting renewable gases, in this case biomethane, in the supply of gas to our customers. This project also constitutes another strong contribution from Goldenergy to the development of the circular economy”.

In turn, José Luís Teixeira, administrator of Teixeira Batel stated that “this investment is very positive for the Exploration, as it reduces its environmental impact, transforming what would normally be just natural fertilizers into energy, which can be consumed daily in houses of the Portuguese”.
