Supermarket workers on strike on May 1st

-

O The Union of Workers of Large Superficies, Warehouses and Services of Portugal (STGSSP) issued a strike notice covering workers in these sectors throughout the national territory, from 00:00 to 24:00 on May 1st.

According to the union, the strike notice fulfills the demand for “better wages and pensions, dignity in the workplace” and allows workers not to report to work on the International Workers’ Day holiday “in situations in which they are imposed on the provision of work”.

Workers demand a general increase in salaries and pensions, the boosting of collective bargaining, the regulation of working hours and the reconciliation of professional and family life.

In the advance notice, the STGSSP states that, during the strike, “the services necessary for the safety and maintenance of equipment and facilities will be observed, in the manner usually provided by workers, and following the example of what happens during periods of daily closure and /or weekly and as long as they cannot be guaranteed by workers” who do not join the strike.
