Last Thursday (2), paramedics were called to Frankfurt airport after around 70 passengers on a flight from Mauritius reported feeling ill mid-flight, suffering from vomiting and diarrhea.

The incident occurred on Condor flight DE2315, which departed Port Louis International Airport in Mauritius at around 7:55 am and landed in Germany almost 12 hours later at 5:30 pm.

According to German media, waiting for the Airbus A330 aircraft was a fleet of ambulances that had been sent after the airline warned local authorities about the disease outbreak on board the plane.

Of the 290 passengers on flight DE-2315, about a quarter reported experiencing gastrointestinal problems, including nausea and diarrhea. According to the airline, the problem did not affect pilots and flight attendants.

It is still not entirely clear how long after takeoff passengers began reporting symptoms, but even with more and more customers reporting some type of stomach problem, the decision was to continue to Frankfurt, rather than make an emergency landing in another country.

Fortunately, it appears that some of the passengers had already recovered by the time the aircraft arrived in Frankfurt, as local media reported that not all ambulances ended up being needed.

The first suspicion as to the cause of the disease lies with the meal served during the flight. Condor stated that it has already started an investigation to understand how so many passengers on a single flight became ill. However, an airline spokesperson declined to comment on whether the on-board food was responsible.

Some types of food poisoning, such as that caused by Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), can begin causing unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea within 30 minutes of consuming contaminated food, according to the Centers for Food Control and Prevention. US diseases.

Other common and highly contagious types of stomach illnesses, such as norovirus, can take several days for symptoms to appear, suggesting that passengers may have become infected during their stay in Mauritius.

The aircraft, which is new, spent more than 24 hours without operating another flight after landing in Frankfurt, time allocated for cleaning and sanitizing the environment.
