Tesla fires employees in software, engineering and services departments

Tesla continues its layoff campaign… Several publications report that the company led by Elon Musk laid off more workers in different areas, with those affected being informed over the weekend and this Monday.

Software, engineering and services are the affected areas

According to the Electrek and the Business Insider, it is not known how many employees were laid off at Tesla in this latest round of layoffs. What is indicated is that the jobs that are being eliminated are in departments such as software, engineering and services.

One of the sources of Business Insiderwho still works at Tesla, says they are waiting for communication from Elon Musk about extending the job cuts.

We need closure or a sign that we can stop worrying about unemployment.

He said.

Tesla began a wave of layoffs in mid-April, announcing that it would lay off 10% of its global workforce. In addition to the dismissal of workers in different areas, several executives announced their departure or were fired by the electric car manufacturer.

Meanwhile, last week, Tesla cut a large portion of its Supercharger team. Among those affected is Rebecca Tinucci, who led the area and was instrumental in expanding the company's charging network. Elon Musk forced other executives to reduce their teams to the bare minimum, under threat of losing their jobs if they did not comply.

Layoffs after layoffs at Tesla

At the moment, it is not known how long the layoffs at Tesla will last. Elon Musk reportedly confided internally that he intends to reduce the company's workforce by 20%. To come to fruition, This could mean the departure of more than 28,000 workerstaking into account that, prior to the announcement in mid-April, the company employed more than 140,000 people worldwide.

Initially, the tycoon said that they had detected overlapping functions and other inefficiencies due to the large growth in personnel in recent years. However, layoffs are occurring at a time when Tesla presents one of its worst financial results in a long time. During the first quarter of 2024, the company suffered a 55% annual drop in net profits and also saw a sharp decline in demand for its vehicles. Of the 433,371 it produced during that period, it delivered 386,810.

The curious thing is that, according to the sources of Electrek, some areas of Tesla are becoming deserted due to the scale of the layoffs. This could force the company to rehire some of the laid-off workers to cover demand and obligations in each sector. If this actually happens, it won't be a big surprise.
