Built since 1988, the California achieved iconic caravan status also thanks to its name, as it was inspired by the laid-back spirit of the sunny North American state. However, in this new life, revealed this Tuesday and based on the long version of the Multivan, it is Europe that Volkswagen has its eye on, by including a plug-in hybrid mechanics, with 245 hp, capable of complying with the strict rules of emissions from the Old Continent, while also offering 4Motion all-wheel drive (it is the Group’s first MQB model to combine plug-in hybrid propulsion with the all-wheel drive system) and towing capacity of up to two tonnes.

Other mechanical options are the direct injection turbodiesel engine (TDI), with four cylinders and 150 hp, and the supercharged gasoline block, also with direct injection (TSI), delivering 204 hp, both front-wheel drive.

Inside, Volkswagen replaced the rear seat with two individual seats.

Regardless of the choice of engine, the new motorhome will be available in five versions: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper (with mini kitchen in the rear, with a gas stove, two drawers and storage), Coast and Ocean — both with kitchenette, with sink, a single burner gas stove and cupboards. In either case, a roof tent and sliding doors on both sides, with mosquito nets, are included. Among the options, there is a new awning, which can be mounted on both sides of the vehicle.

The fact that it is based on the MQB platform means that the California now comes with a wide range of driver assistance systems, from the vehicle’s braking function to Travel Assist, which offers moments of semi-autonomous driving.

Inside, Volkswagen replaced the rear seat with two individual seats, which still allow it to be transformed into a bed, but now allow the storage of large objects, such as bicycles, without compromising the rest space.

Each of the rear seats is removable and equipped with a drawer for additional storage. VW has placed several USB-C charging ports throughout the cabin, inside which it is possible to turn off all the lights with a single button. Furthermore, with the Beach Tour version and above, there is a new camping control unit in the passenger-side C-pillar, through which it is possible to control various vehicle functions, which are accessible via the infotainment system and an app. for smartphone.

At the top of the range, the Ocean version also features two 230-volt sockets, heated front seats, supplementary air heating, a storage compartment in the roof, a folding table (which can also be used inside and as an extension of the workbench ) and a 28-liter fresh water tank, common to the Coast version.

Pre-sales of the new California will begin in June, when prices will be announced, and the first deliveries are expected after the summer. For reference, the current California is offered from €53,565.
