(Sputnik) – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that the United States does not support Taiwan’s independence, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

“The United States continues to pursue the one-China policy and does not support Taiwan’s independence,” Blinken said, according to the ministry’s statement.

Taiwan has been governed independently from mainland China since 1949. Beijing views the island as its province, while Taiwan — a territory with its own elected government — maintains it is an autonomous country but stops short of declaring independence. Beijing opposes any official contacts by foreign states with Taipei and considers Chinese sovereignty over the island to be indisputable.
