Employment in Portugal reached an all-time high in the first three months of 2024, highlights Randstad in the quarterly analysis bulletin released this Wednesday.

The number of people in employment rose to 5,010,700 professionals, of which the vast majority (85.7%) are employed. However, the number of unemployed people also increased by 3.8% in the quarter (13,600 people) in a chain.

“The increase in employment in this first quarter of the year occurred both among salaried workers (23,200 people, that is, + 0.5%), and in the group of self-employed workers (15,900 people, that is, +2.3%), standing at 720,000 professionals”, adds the same note.

According to Randstad’s analysis, the increase in employment occurred in almost all age groups and in all sectors. Still regarding the age group, “a decrease in employment was only recorded in the youngest group aged 16 to 24, by -6,100 people, that is, -2.1%”.

With regard to sectors, industrial “showed the best performance in quarterly and interannual terms”.

“The biggest increases were seen in manufacturing industries, with an increase to +22,200 people. The analysis also highlights the increases seen in consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities (+14,600 people) and in education (+12,800 people)”, details the Dutch company in the same analysis referring to the first quarter of the year.

Isabel Roseiro, Marketing Director at Randstad Portugal, says that “the analysis of the data published today by INE shows that there are challenges in the market that are being overcome and gives us good indicators, such as the increase in employment and this decrease very expressive of long-term unemployment”. “However, it is important to understand that this type of unemployment still has a high value, which in a context of talent shortage makes it increasingly important to identify people who find themselves in this situation, in order to allow the use of solutions such as upskilling and reskilling, to train people and provide the skills necessary for current market dynamics”, adds the same person in charge, cited in the analysis note.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) reported today that the unemployment rate stood at 6.8% in the first quarter.
