In a new interview with Vanity Fair, actress Anne Hathaway recalled the phase in which she became a toxic asset in Hollywood after winning an Oscar for “Les Miserables” and how she thinks filmmaker Christopher Nolan played a decisive role in the survival of her career.

It was in 2013 that the actress became one of the most ridiculed and hated personalities on the Internet, after a ‘charming’ start in Hollywood and with the great ‘sponsorship’ of Disney with the films “The Princess Diaries” (2001-2004) .

It was “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) that truly launched her to mainstream status, but the character of ‘good girl’ Andy Sachs also created a first group of anti-fans known as ‘Hathahaters’.

The mood began to darken online on February 27, 2011, when she hosted the Oscar ceremony with James Franco: generally seen as one of the biggest fiascoes in the history of golden statuettes, the actress later described the night as the most embarrassing moment of your life.

Chosen to appeal to a younger audience, it was she who received most of the blame when, to compensate for a practically sleepwalking partner, she appeared, in her own words, ‘slightly manic and hyper enthusiastic’.

Reports that he was a difficult person and a former boyfriend who turned out to be a con artist increased the antipathy, which culminated in the 2012-2013 awards season, with more and more people finding his enthusiasm, emotion and even the smile in the speeches when collecting award after award for Best Supporting Actress with “Les Miserables” (2012).

Without exaggeration, Anne Hathaway has become one of America’s most hated movie stars online. The actress says she searched for her name after winning the Oscar and discovered that one of the main results was an article titled ‘Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?’, the first of several that led to the respected newspaper The New York Times picked up on the topic with another article, ‘Do We Really Hate Anne Hathaway?’.

Result: a career break because he felt that “people needed a break” from him.

“A lot of people didn’t give me roles because they were so worried about how toxic my identity had become online,” he now tells Vanity Fair.

“I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who didn’t care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve ever had in one of the best films I’ve ever been in,” he said, referring to NASA scientist Amelia Brand in “Interstellar ” (2014), two years after being Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012).

“I don’t know if he knew he was supporting me at the time, but it had that effect. And my career didn’t lose momentum as it could have if he hadn’t supported me”, he says.

“It’s very difficult to go through humiliation. The secret is not to let it get you down. You have to stay bold and it can be difficult because you think ‘Play it safe. […], if it doesn’t draw too much attention, it won’t hurt’. But if you want to do that, don’t be an actor. He’s a tightrope walker. Reckless. He is asking people to invest his time, money, attention and care in you. Therefore, he has to give them something worth all these things. And if it’s not costing you anything, what is it really offering?” he concluded.
