DAt the premiere gala of ‘Big Brother 2024’ there were great debates. Perhaps the most intense concerns Jacques Costa, the first non-binary person to enter the ‘most watched house in the country’.

The participant asked Cláudio Ramos to be addressed with feminine pronouns, which was understood by some spectators as being incongruous, given that neutral personal pronouns already exist.

To clarify Jacques’ position, a statement was issued on the competitor’s page in which several explanations are provided.

“As you know, our friend Jacques entered ‘Big Brother’ as the first non-binary person on the program. There are many messages of support and affection that we have received, and for that we are immensely grateful. However, we have noticed that they have been coming some questions are arising about Jacques’ choice to use female pronouns. We would like to take this moment to explain what this means and why it is so important to respect this choice”starts by mentioning the note.

“What does it mean to be a non-binary person? Being non-binary is a gender identity that does not fall exclusively within traditional concepts of male or female. Non-binary people can identify as both genders, neither, or as something completely different. It is a unique expression of who they are and deserves to be recognized and respected like any other gender identity. Why are pronouns important? Pronouns are a fundamental part of a person’s identity. They are the way we refer to ourselves to others and demonstrate respect for their identity. Using the correct pronouns is a simple yet powerful way to recognize and validate someone’s gender identity.”adds the statement.

The text also highlights that the “non-binary people can choose a variety of pronouns, including ‘ela’, ‘ele’ or neutral forms like ‘elu”, even though the “Portuguese language faces challenges in non-binary communication”.

“How can we support Jacques? It’s simple: respect Jacques’s chosen pronouns (she/her). This means using the pronouns she prefers, like her, and avoiding using pronouns that do not correspond to her gender identity. To Furthermore, we must educate ourselves about diverse gender identities and promote an environment of respect and inclusion. We thank everyone for the support they have given Jacques. Let us continue to celebrate her authenticity and send her love and positivity throughout her journey in ‘Big Brother'”finishes the text.

The statement was left in the caption of a publication that has as a photograph the presence of Zé Lopes and Luísa Castel-Branco at yesterday’s ‘Dois at 10’, in the aftermath of the gala. At that moment, the writer was very critical of Jacques Costa, having said, among other things, the phrase: “If a person is neither man nor woman, is he a cat?”

O Lifestyle to the Minute clarified other doubts regarding this topic here.
