Ntoday’s update of the Olympic qualification ranking, after the Grand Slam in Antalya, Portugal maintains seven judokas in the virtual qualification zone, but Telma Monteiro is no longer the 17th and last direct at -57 kg.

The lack of competition for the Benfica judoka, bronze medalist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016, has left Telma Monteiro at a loss, without the possibility of adding points, with the last ones to be obtained in September, at the Baku Grand Slam (7th. th).

The 38-year-old judoka has the most extensive track record in the sport in Portugal, with an Olympic bronze, four world runner-up titles, six European champion titles and numerous medals, many of which are on the international circuit.

After Tokyo2020, the Games held in 2021, Telma Monteiro revealed her desire to continue on the circuit and qualify for Paris, in what could be her sixth Olympic Games, after Athens2004, Beijing2008, London2016, Rio2016 (bronze) and Tokyo2020.

In the race to Paris2024, and in addition to Telma Monteiro, now in the ‘quota reallocation’ — the remaining quota places for the judokas with the highest number of points -, Portugal has in the virtual qualifying zone Catarina Costa (-48 kg), Bárbara Timo (-63 kg), Patrícia Sampaio (-78 kg), Rochele Nunes (+78 kg), Jorge Fonseca (-100 kg) and João Fernando (-81 kg).

The last two, Sporting judokas, left Antalya with good results: Jorge Fonseca, bronze in Tokyo2020 and two-time world champion, was a gold medalist, and João Fernando won bronze.

Results that allowed Fonseca to move up five places in -100 kg, where he is now 10th, while João Fernando remains out of direct qualification, but moved up four places in -81 kg, reinforced his points and is the first judoka right after the direct entries.

From Antalya there also came good news for the young Taís Pina, aged 19, who was a silver medalist, returning to good performance on the international stage, in a year in which she had already been on the doorstep of the medals at the Grand Slam in Paris, in fifth place. .

Algés and Dafundo’s judoka jumped from 40th to 32nd in -70 kg, but still far from the qualification zone.

Qualification for the Paris2024 Games officially closes in June, with the final lists and the reallocation of the last quotas by the Olympic Committees and the International Judo Federation scheduled between June 25th and July 8th.

The world calendar has several continental championships in April, including the European ones, in Zagreb (25th to 28th April), while the World Championships are scheduled for Abu Dhabi between 19th and 24th May, after the Grand Slams in Dushanbe (Tajikistan ) and from Barysy (Kazakhstan).
