Renan Cavalari Popowicz, performer of the drag queen singer Sereia do Amazonas, died at the age of 31, on Monday (22), in Paraná. The information was confirmed to Who by the Londrina Artistic Foundation (Funcart) this Tuesday (23).

The institution, which operates as the Municipal School of Dance, Theater and Ballet of Londrina, reported that Renan’s death occurred on Monday, but did not provide further details about what led to Renan’s death. “With regret, we announce the death of collaborator and former employee Renan Cavalari. We inform you that Funcart declares mourning and suspends its activities on April 23, 2024”, says the official note.

In September 2023, in an open letter signed as Sereia, the artist made a long outburst. “Contrary to what many think, I didn’t get here yesterday, things for me never happened out of the blue, they were never easy. I’ve been working for 13 years, I’ve always been a warrior, I fight for my work, for my love of music, for theater, for dance, for local artists, but at times I need to stop, reflect and rethink our future”, he began.

Artistic trajectory

Sereia do Amazonas was a joint creation of Renan Cavalari and theater director Silvio Ribeiro. The character took to the stage for the first time in 2015, in the play República, a comedy. In the show, Sereia conveyed a message against LGBTphobia and celebrated diversity.

On his YouTube channel, Renan shared everyday situations and discussed topics of resistance and inclusion.
