Maria Feliciana dos Santos, known as one of the tallest women in the world, at 2.25 meters, died on Saturday, April 27, at the age of 77, in Sergipe, Brazil, the family revealed to the Brazilian media.
Maria had been admitted to a private hospital in Aracaju for about a week, with pneumonia. Her health condition worsened until, on Saturday, she died due to “cardiac complications”.
Maria was born in Amparo, São Francisco. For years, she toured several Brazilian cities, taking part in circus shows.
In the 1960s she won the title of ‘queen of heights’ in a competition organized by Globo’s ‘Hora da Buzina’ program.
At the age of 23, he managed to reach a record height of 2.25 meters and a statue was erected in his honor at the entrance to the Museu da Gente Sergipana, in Brazil.
For many years, Maria was considered the tallest woman in Brazil and the world. But as she got older, she was “shrinking.”
Faced with his sudden death, the mayor of Aracaju, Edvaldo Nogueira, proclaimed three days of municipal mourning.
At the moment, the tallest living woman in the world is Turkish Rumeysa Gelgi, at 2.15 meters.
