ANDn statements to journalists at the national headquarters of the PCP, in Lisbon, after a meeting with the League of Portuguese Firefighters (LBP), Paulo Raimundo was asked about the attacks on immigrants that took place in the early hours of this Friday in Porto.

In his response, the communist leader highlighted that these are “hate crimes”, which deserve the “total condemnation” of the PCP, and highlighted the “very quick action of the police forces”, as well as the “popular participation and response that was given against this hate crime.”

“We cannot make the monster that is on the loose habitual and everyone assumes the responsibilities of the strength they give to the monster”, highlighted Paulo Raimundo.

For the general secretary of the PCP, “no one can avoid being held responsible for feeding the monster”, which then “explodes in their hands, as it did”.

“Unfortunately, it is not the only case. We are talking about hate crimes. (…) Let these people be judged quickly and, if necessary, convicted. They will hardly be,” he said.

Asked about Chega’s threat to file a complaint against the President of the Republic for the crime of “treason against the country”, for having defended reparations to former colonies, Paulo Raimundo said that the PCP does not support this idea and also “does not want to feed it “.

“Food for this every day for a long time now is the paragonas on television news… This doesn’t contribute to anything, it only contributes to other problems that we face every day, and which we faced last Saturday”, he said.

In these statements to journalists, the leader of the PCP was also questioned about the statements made by the mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, who today asked for the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) to be abolished, considering that it “remains dead in the face of apparent lack of control over migratory flows”.

In response, Paulo Raimundo said that the party considered that the extinction of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) was “a rash”, but “the problem at this moment is not whether the SEF was badly extinguished or not, or whether AIMA was or not well constituted”.

“The problem is the more than 400 thousand processes that continue to accumulate with the lives of many people suspended. There are people who are, at the moment, having their residence permit expired”, he highlighted.

The communist general secretary defended that, faced with this scenario, the solution must involve taking exceptional measures, as proposed by the PCP, which include strengthening human resources so that they “resolve once and for all the 400 thousand processes”.

“Because we are talking about 400,000 lives hanging in the balance. Some at the moment are formally illegal: there are people who are today facing problems in their lives, in their day-to-day lives, because they are unable to obtain insurance, a work contract , because they are in a situation of illegality for which they have no responsibility”, he stated.

In the early hours of Friday, the PSP was alerted at around 01:00 to an attack in Campo 24 de Agosto, in Porto, against two immigrants by a group of four or five men who fled before the agents arrived, the door specified. -police voice, indicating that the two attacked were treated at Hospital São João.

About 10 minutes later, on Rua do Bonfim, 10 immigrants were attacked, in the house where they were staying, by a group of 10 men, armed with sticks and, allegedly, with a firearm, which the PSP has not yet been able to confirm. , said the same source.

According to the spokesperson, at 3:00 am, on Rua Fernandes Tomás, another immigrant was also attacked by other suspects, one of whom used a firearm.

Following these attacks, six men were identified and one was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, having been brought to court and placed in pre-trial detention.
