From May 1st, the sale of liquid alcohol at a concentration of 70% will once again be prohibited. The measure is a determination by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), justified by the risk of causing accidents due to the high flammability of the product.

The Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), from the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), reinforces the warning to the population about the ban.

Until April 30th, commercial establishments that still have the product, such as grocery stores, grocery stores and pharmacies, can sell 70% liquid alcohol and thus exhaust them, in a way that complies with health legislation.

“The return of the restriction on the sale of liquid alcohol at 70%, directly to the consumer, aims to prevent accidents when handling the product, including by children”, highlights the CEO of FVS-RCP, Tatyana Amorim.

The restriction is limited to the product in liquid form and, even after April 30th, the population will continue to have 70% alcohol gel available, which is equally effective in cleaning hands and surfaces.

The person responsible for Health Surveillance at FVS-RCP, Jackson Alagoas, reinforces that the ban has existed since 2002, with Anvisa making the marketing of the product more flexible, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, until December 31, 2023, making it permitted stocks will be exhausted by the end of April 2024.

“It is important to highlight that Anvisa’s decision does not impact the unavailability of products for hygiene and disinfection of hands and surfaces, as there are several other product options for the same purpose available to the population”, says Jackson.
