Summary
Pregnancy, during the COVID-19 pandemic, proved to be a risk factor for the spread of the infection. However, even with the increased risk, the population’s insecurity regarding vaccination was and has been an obstacle to the health of pregnant and breastfeeding women. From the same point of view, mortality is higher in pregnant women infected with COVID-19, therefore, the great relevance of raising awareness among this group about the safety of vaccination is seen. From this perspective, studies analyzed show that low adherence to vaccination is alarming, both pregnant and lactating women and the general population show insecurity when asked about vaccination for these women. Furthermore, it is reviewed in the present study that the low acceptance of the vaccine in pregnant and breastfeeding women is motivated by socioeconomic factors. However, scientific evidence suggests the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant and breastfeeding women, with low rates of adverse events. Furthermore, vaccination during pregnancy has been shown to reduce rates of COVID-19 infection and obstetric complications. Therefore, although vaccine denial persists, especially among pregnant and breastfeeding women, the scientific basis indicates that vaccination against COVID-19 is beneficial and safe for this population, contributing to the protection of the mother and fetus.
