The City of Itabuna, through the Municipal Health Department, provided the SAMU-192 emergency doctor, Dr. Walbert Alcoforado da Silveira, to join the Bahian task force that provides emergency medical aid to thousands of homeless and displaced families in Rio Grande do Sul. South. The measure meets the request of the Government of Bahia in view of the professional’s specialization as an aeromedical professional.

Doctor Walbert is part of the task force with the Bahia Military Fire Department in humanitarian aid. As an aeromedic, he is accredited to provide assistance in transferring patients on aircraft and is a specialist in urgent and emergency care. He is currently working in Bento Gonçalves and Caxias do Sul, the two cities most affected by the floods.

The SAMU-192 medical professional has recognized experience in humanitarian aid, as he has worked in disaster and catastrophe missions in Brazil since 2011. He has already been part of aid teams for the Yanomami peoples, in Manaus (AM), and in the Triângulo Mineiro, in the Covid-19 pandemic, flooding in Acre and in the cities of Itamaraju and Itabuna in the 2021 floods, in the south of Bahia.

DONATIONS
By determination of the mayor of Itabuna, Augusto Castro (PSD), and the First Lady Andrea Castro, the Secretariat for Social Promotion and Combating Poverty is collecting non-perishable foodstuffs, blankets, water, cleaning and hygiene products, towels and clothes of all types and sizes, with gender identification (male and female).

Donations can be delivered packed in cardboard boxes or sealed plastic bags to the Secretariat for Social Promotion and Combating Poverty, at Praça Celso Fontes Lima, in Góes Calmon, until Friday, the 10th, from 8 am to 4 pm.

In a message today, interim secretary Luciana Seara said that “there is a current of solidarity throughout Brazil and the world to help and help the homeless and those displaced by the tragedy of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul”.

“At the end of December 2021, Itabuna suffered a similar situation with the other municipalities in the south and extreme south of Bahia and we received the affection, support and help from Brazilians, including those from the south of the country. Now, it is our turn to integrate this humanitarian chain to support thousands of families from Rio Grande do Sul who are suffering the worst moments of their lives,” he added.
