The couple started dating in 2005, when the princess was 17 and Paolo Liuzzo was 24. The relationship became public a year later, when the pair joined Beatrice’s parents – Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and Prince Andrew – on a ski trip to Verbier, in the Swiss Alps. They separated shortly afterwards and, although sources close to the princess told the British press that the relationship was intense, albeit brief, the truth is that there was weighty reasons for everyone to follow their own path. Furthermore, one of the reasons that led to the couple’s separation was the fact that it became public that the then young Liuzzo, a New Yorker with Italian roots, had been accused of involuntary homicide in Jonathan R. Duchatellier, a college friend of his – Liuzzo beat his colleague to death. However, the charge was eventually reduced to physical assault, with Paolo serving 100 hours of community service as a sentence. Years later, in 2009, Paolo was arrested in Australia and accused of possession of cocaine, something that was discovered because the young man had a huge car accident.

It is now known that Paolo Liuzzo was found dead in a Miami hotel around 3:20 pm on February 7th. And although all the details are not yet known, the Miami police reported that they are investigating the case as “death due to overdose”. Something that, according to the British press, left the princess Beatrice shocked and sad.

In addition to his history of violence, the now 41-year-old art consultant had serious problems with drug and gambling addiction, and large debts. A close friend of Liuzzo reportedly told the British newspaper The Sun that he was going through a “bad time on a personal level”, adding that his friend had a very fast-paced lifestyle and that everyone was afraid that, sooner or later, something would go wrong. According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, months before his death, Paolo Liuzzo borrowed 60 thousand dollars (about 56 thousand euros) to his friend Arshad Sadikeen to take his latest boyfriend on a Caribbean cruise. When Paolo missed the payment date, Sadikeen filed a complaint in court. Process that was ongoing, but now, with Liuzzo’s death, it is unlikely to result in compensation.

Almost 20 years after separating from Paolo Liuzzo, the princess Beatrice lives in a happy relationship with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, whom he married in 2020, and who has a daughter, Sienna, aged two and a half.
