Based on the award-winning solo play that won the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, “Baby Reindeer” follows struggling comedian Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd) in his twisted relationship with Martha (Jessica Gunning), a stalker, and the impact this connection has on him by ending up forcing him to face a repressed trauma.

On social media, viewers quickly found the real stalker and some of the messages shared on X, formerly Twitter.

In an interview with the Daily Record, Richard Gadd’s stalker confessed that she has received “death threats because of his series”, stressing that “what the comedian says is not true”. “I’m the victim here, not him,” said the woman, who was not identified.

“I’ve been with him a few times (…) His story is that it’s a huge violation of my privacy. I haven’t seen him in 12 years,” he added, stressing that actress Jessica Gunning “doesn’t look like me.”

In an interview with Variety magazine, the comedian confessed that it was “difficult” to remember everything he experienced. “It was difficult, I can’t deny it. I mean, who in their right mind wants to revisit the worst thing that ever happened to them? The worst period of their life? Of course, it affects you and leaves a mark on you. But at the same time, sometimes I feel that revisiting the pain and reliving things can lead to better understanding”, said the Brit.

The story begins when comedian and bartender Donny offers a drink to a lonely woman in a Camden bar. “Donny, a struggling comedian who works at a bar, meets a lonely woman who claims to be a lawyer. When he offers her tea, she becomes obsessed with him”, summarizes Netflix.

“Emotionally it’s all 100% true, if that makes sense,” Richard Gadd explained to the magazine, adding that it was all based on “things that happened to him.” “But of course you can’t count [na série] the exact truth, for legal and artistic reasons”, he said.

“You can’t just copy someone else’s life and name and put it on television. And obviously, we were aware that some of the characters are vulnerable people and you don’t want to make their lives more difficult. So you have to change things to suit yourself.” protect and protect other people”, he explained.
