“The extreme left and political correctness” ruined sitcoms, says Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld gave an interview to “The New Yorker” magazine, in which he blamed the unpopularity of sitcoms today’s “extreme left” and “political correctness”.

“It used to be that you would go home at the end of the day and people would watch ‘Cheers, That Bar’ or ‘Family on the Right’. You expected there to be something entertaining on television. Where is that now?” he asked.

“It’s the fault of the extreme left and political correctness, and of people being so afraid of offending others.”

For the comedian, only stand-up comedy is truly free. “We don’t have anyone policing us,” she said. “It’s the public that does it. We know when we have lost our way and we quickly adjust.”

“But when you write a script and it passes through four or five different hands, committees, groups, that’s the end of comedy.”

Giving an example of an episode of “Seinfeld”, the comedian recalled a joke in which Kramer’s character decides to start a business that involves homeless people pulling rickshaws. “Today we wouldn’t make that joke, we would think of another one,” he said.

Guaranteeing that he will try to keep his comedy current, Seinfeld praised the comedians who “take risks”. “And they are those of stand-up who have the freedom to do so”, he added. “If it doesn’t go well, no one else is to blame.”
