Therefore, for Hugo Bellotti Lopes, an electrophysiologist at Hemodynamics at the Hospital das Clínicas da UFG/Ebserh, when medication is no longer enough to maintain a healthy heart rhythm, a procedure without cuts or stitches can be the solution to the problem. “Through the femoral vein, a catheter is positioned inside the heart that records the electrical signals. It is from this record that we are able to locate in which region of the heart the arrhythmias are located. Then, after verifying the need for intervention, we started with the ablation”, tells Hugo to explainWhat is Invasive Electrophysiology. After the complete diagnosis, radiofrequency ablation is performed, which is characterized by being a definitive cauterization of arrhythmogenic foci and an alternative to palliative pharmacological treatment.

Electrophysiological, diagnostic or treatment procedures have a low risk of complications, affecting between 0.5 and 1% of patients submitted. Vascular complications are the most common, when a small hematoma appears on the leg where access to the femoral vein takes place. However, patients with severe cardiac conditions need greater assistance and pre- and post-operative care.

As it is a subspecialty that needs modern equipment and advanced technology to perform complex procedures, HC-UFG/Ebserh is one of the few hospitals to offer electroanatomical mapping in Brazil, exam that makes it possible to create a drawing three-dimensional view of the heart and visualize the blood circuit of the arrhythmia, aiding in a more accurate diagnosis of the disease.

At HC de Goiânia, around 4 procedures are performed per week and 470 people have already been assisted since the service began to be offered, in 2018. Most ablations were performed to cure severe cardiac arrhythmias.

Eligible patients are referred for treatment at HC-UFG/Ebserh after consultation with a cardiologist at the Integrated Health Care Centers (Cais) in Goiânia.
