“Together with the municipal and state health departments, health and environmental surveillance teams from the Ministry of Health are monitoring the case confirmed by laboratory criteria and awaiting the results of the genomic sequencing of the virus, in progress at the National Reference Laboratory of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation” , informed the folder.

Amid the scenario, 120 thousand doses of triple viral vaccine (measles, rubella and mumps) were sent to the state. 36 people were vaccinated in a timely manner, including family members, neighbors and health professionals who had contact with the child. The last case of measles identified in Brazil was in June 2022. As a result, the country was assessed by an international committee and was certified as an area free of measles transmission. However, as the disease still circulates internationally, it is possible for infected people to enter the country.

“It’s something that could happen. But when the case is identified, measures are taken: identification of secondary cases and blocking vaccination. Measures that have already been taken by the health authorities of Rio Grande do Sul”, said the director of the Department of Immunization and Communicable Diseases, Eder Gatti.
