People passing through the Center of Campo Grande this morning (14) take the opportunity to take care of their health with the free services that are being offered in allusion to Kidney Day, at Praça Ary Coelho. The action started at 8am and goes until 4pm.

Even with the heat at the end of summer, it’s worth waiting a few minutes to take exams and receive guidance on the importance of having healthy kidneys. Retired Cecila Matzenbacher, 75, was one of the people who stopped by.

“I was going to pay a bill and saw that there were a lot of doctors here. I decided to stop”, he says. When she spoke to the reporter, she had measured her blood sugar and was waiting to do other tests.

In addition to the blood glucose test, a creatinine test is offered to possibly identify changes in the kidneys, blood pressure measurement and an exam that can detect diabetic retinopathy, a problem that can lead to blindness.

Another person who managed to receive care was also 75-year-old retiree, Diolar César Carvalho. In addition to being examined, he was pleased to have received the apple and banana that are distributed locally. “I was going to schedule my surgery for his glaucoma, I saw that there were people here and I decided to stop to check my blood pressure and eat some fruit”, he says.

“Little Computer” – Abrec/MS (Associação Beneficente dos Renais Crônicos de Mato Grosso do Sul) carries out the action together with Unigran University and Sesau (Municipal Health Department). Organized every Kidney Day, it is already traditional in the Capital.

President of the entity, nephrologist Maria Aparecida Arroyo explains that the objective is to help the population take better care of their kidneys. According to the specialist, the organ is like the body’s “little computer”, but its functions are unknown to most people.

“It’s our ‘little computer’. It’s very important for everything: it filters water, controls salt, regulates hormones and warns you about diseases you may have”, he summarizes.

It reinforces the importance of preventive actions, such as the square. “I don’t want to catch the patient already on the stretcher. We have to alert diabetics, hypertensive patients and all those who have immunological diseases to take care of their kidneys”, he concludes.
