The State Department of Health of Minas Gerais (SES-MG) held this Saturday (23/3) the second D-day to combat arboviruses. Titled “Minas United in the Fight Against Mosquitoes”, the action seeks to mobilize and raise awareness among the population on how to keep environments free from outbreaks of Aedes aegypti.

The mobilization had the participation of 620 municipalities, distributed across all 28 Regional Health Units in Minas Gerais. Actions such as collective visits to homes for guidance, cleaning of environments conducive to the reproduction of the mosquito that transmits dengue, zika and chikungunya, as well as marches, recreational activities, educational blitzes, delivery of informational material, artistic interventions, were promoted by the city halls that participated of the action.

“This D-Day is another opportunity to draw the attention of all people from Minas Gerais to the importance of working together to combat mosquitoes. Inside homes is where around 80% of Aedes aegypti outbreaks are concentrated in containers with stagnant water. Therefore, it is essential that everyone does their part”, warned the Undersecretary of Health Surveillance at SES-MG, Eduardo Prosdocimi, who followed the activities in Belo Horizonte.

In the capital, prevention actions were carried out in nine regions. In the Pampulha region, a cleaning effort was carried out by the Urban Cleaning Superintendence (SLU), and drones were flown over to map and eliminate mosquito outbreaks, in addition to inspections by Endemic Disease Control Agents (ACE) to provide guidance to residents and traders. . Mobiliza SUS, a mobilization group from the Municipal Health Department of BH, also carried out educational approaches, with the distribution of informative materials to prevent arboviruses.

Belo Horizonte’s Undersecretary of Health Promotion and Surveillance, Thaysa Drummond, highlighted that the municipality’s actions have been incessant. “Not only on this D-Day, but daily, we have carried out a series of actions to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito”, she highlighted.

“Drones have been important allies in difficult-to-access terrain, in identifying outbreaks and even in the application of larvicides. In addition, SLU constantly collects debris throughout the city. We announce the days of the joint efforts to the population so that people can organize themselves and collect material for disposal,” she explained.

D-Day across the state

Supervised by the Regional Health Superintendence (SRS) of Divinópolis, at least 25 cities in the Western macro-region promoted social mobilization actions to eliminate Aedes aegypti outbreaks. In Divinópolis, the Municipal Health Department, in partnership with SRS, held an educational exhibition at Praça do Ferroviário, in the Esplanada neighborhood, in addition to actions in the Dom Cristiano, Jardim das Oliveiras and Fonte Boa neighborhoods.

The activities were in partnership with the Esplanada Neighborhood Residents Association, together with the company VLI, Academia de Letras de Divinópolis, Association of Collectors of Recyclable Materials (Asmare), Lions Clubs International and the Fire Department.

In the Regional Health Superintendency (SRS) of Uberaba, the 22 municipalities also joined forces, this Saturday, to eliminate mosquito outbreaks. Cleanings, educational blitzes, intensification of home visits, blocking with backpack pumps, information stands, drone overflights, motorcades, and interaction with children were carried out, in joint work with other municipal bodies and partners, and even distribution of citronella seedlings throughout the Triângulo Sul Health macro-region.

In Uberaba, the actions included the participation of 50 professionals, including ACE, health educators, drivers, municipal guards and partners involved. The municipality carried out an educational blitz, a cleaning campaign with trucks and home visits to 761 properties, covering 1,575 people in the Jardim Alvorada neighborhood.

The mobilization included a partnership between several Municipal Secretariats, the Operational Company for Development, Sanitation and Urban Actions (Codau) and the Uberaba City Council.

In the Northeast region of the state, 28 municipalities of the Teófilo Otoni Regional Health Superintendency (SRS) joined D-Day. In Teófilo Otoni, a cleaning effort was carried out in the Jardim Iracema, Jardim das Acácias and Serra Verde neighborhoods, a motorcade, blitz with delivery of educational material and guidance to people passing through Praça Tiradentes, in the city center. The actions included the participation of the Military Police, the Fire Department, the Egídio José da Silva Faculty of Technology and the Teófilo Otoni Municipal Health Council.

For Leonardo Figueiredo, regional health superintendent of Teófilo Otoni, the Minas Unida no Combate ao Mosquito movement reflects the importance of integrated actions between public authorities and society. “Today, 28 municipalities in our region are developing actions to eliminate the focus and provide guidance to the population. If everyone plays their part, together, we will win this battle against the Aedes aegypti mosquito”, declared Figueiredo.

Undersecretary Eduardo Prosdocimi celebrated the results. “Minas Gerais is once again setting an example, with this great support and action by municipalities, which is essential for us to draw the attention of society as a whole to the individual and collective role in public health. We are on the right path for this great confrontation”, he highlighted.

Investments and training

Since December 2023, SES-MG has already transferred more than R$112 million to Minas Gerais municipalities for actions to combat dengue, zika and chikungunya in the state. The Secretariat is also investing more than R$30 million for cities to contract drone services, which will be used to identify, monitor and treat Aedes aegypti outbreaks and breeding sites, allowing for more targeted and effective action by Municipal Secretariats. of health.

Furthermore, SES-MG is traveling to all the state’s Health Macroregions to work with managers, technicians and professionals in municipal contingency plans and to train doctors, nurses and other health professionals in the clinical management of arboviruses.

“We once again issue an alert to the entire population: if you experience typical signs and symptoms of dengue fever or chikungunya, seek the nearest health unit immediately. We have made a great effort to train health professionals across the state for correct clinical management, in order to qualify service and response time, offering patients adequate care to avoid serious forms of disease and, consequently, reduce deaths”, concluded Eduardo Prosdocimi.
