Government of Acre and city halls promote National Mobilization and Fight against Tuberculosis Week

March 24th is marked by the global fight against tuberculosis (TB). In reference to the date, the government of Acre, with the support of municipal governments, promotes, from the 20th to the 27th of this month, the National Week of Mobilization and Fight against Tuberculosis.

The theme in 2024 is “Yes, we can end tuberculosis” and aims to draw attention to the collective power to end the disease by 2030. The campaign highlights prevention, the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis, what to do in case of suspicion and the importance of carrying out the treatment until the end, to achieve a cure.

The opening of the campaign was held on the morning of this Monday, 25th, on the boardwalk near Colégio Acreano, with the aim of expanding the search for people who have symptoms of the disease.

“Today’s action is to search for these symptomatic patients. Whoever is suspicious, we advise, collect the material, collect the data and, after the result, we call to inform them. If necessary, we begin treatment”, explained the person responsible for the technical area of ​​the Tuberculosis Control Program at the Municipal Health Department (Semsa), Francisco Costa.

For retired Maria das Graças de Lima, the activity facilitated access to the exam. “I passed by here in the morning and saw it. As I’ve had a cough for over three weeks, I decided to clear up this question straight away. I thought it was good because I didn’t have to go to the gas station. And since my daughter also had this disease, I thought I’d better check it out,” she said.

“Tuberculosis is still considered a health problem in the world today. In our state it is no different, we continue to have a high incidence of the disease, but based on data from last year, we can already see a very significant reduction in this number”, said the head of the Communicable Disease Surveillance Center, Elcenira do Nascimento. .

Acre data

In the state of Acre, according to data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan/NET/TB), 545 new cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2023, with an incidence of 60.10 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The cure indicator was (419) 86.0%, which shows that we reached the target recommended by the Ministry of Health (MS), of 85%.

The treatment abandonment indicator that same year was (43) 8.78%, above the established parameter of up to 5%. And the death rate from TB was (11) 2.24%. The MS recommends 3%.

Most common signs and symptoms of tuberculosis

– Dry cough or cough with secretion for more than three weeks, which may progress to coughing with pus or blood;

– Excessive tiredness and prostration;

– Low fever usually in the afternoon;

– Night sweats;

– Lack of appetite;

– Accentuated weight loss;

– Hoarseness.

According to the Ministry of Health, if a person presents symptoms of the disease, it is essential to seek out the health unit closest to their residence for evaluation and examinations. If the result is positive for tuberculosis, treatment should be started as soon as possible and continued until the end.

– Training for doctors and nurses in Primary Care on the clinical management of tuberculosis – will be taught by infectious disease doctor Drª Rita de Cássia, at the Municipal Health Department of Cruzeiro do Sul.

– Active search for respiratory symptoms at the Manoel Nery prison unit.

– Active search in partnership with the Psychosocial Care Center (Caps), with breakfast for homeless people and surveillance.

– Tuberculosis booth. Information about what the disease is, symptoms and prevention, in the Central Square of Cruzeiro do Sul.

Actions that will be developed in other municipalities

– Lectures for community health agents (CHA) in basic health units (UBS) and schools, with distribution of folders.

– Search for respiratory symptoms in basic health units.

– Search for respiratory symptoms in the community in partnerships with CHAs.

– Publicity of the campaign in local media, highlighting the main symptoms of tuberculosis.
