Celebrated annually on March 31, Health and Nutrition Day aims to raise awareness among the population about the
importance of realistic practices and effective public policies. According to the cardiologist
Dr. Yuri Brasilthe date also reinforces the need to acquire good habits for adequate maintenance and strengthening of the heart.

“Heart health is influenced by a series of factors, such as diet, physical activity, stress control and abandoning harmful habits, such as smoking. Therefore, adhering to a healthy lifestyle that includes nutritious eating habits contributes greatly to preventing heart disease”, explains Dr. Yuri.

According to the expert, the ideal is to adopt a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Consuming foods rich in fiber, such as oats, vegetables and fruits, can also help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the blood, protecting against atherosclerosis. Another tip is to always eat unsaturated fats, present in avocado, fish, nuts and olive oil.

For those who want to adopt a healthier lifestyle, Dr. Yuri recommends starting slowly, with gradual changes. “Small changes in everyday life, like opting for a salad instead of chips, choosing a walk instead of watching TV, or taking a few minutes a day to meditate and relax, can make a big difference in the long run.”

In all situations, the most important thing is to always remember that taking care of your heart is essential for a longer, active and healthier life. Adopting a good and nutritious diet not only considerably protects the heart from cardiovascular diseases, but also contributes to a better quality of life and general well-being.
