UA study carried out by Swedish researchers, whose findings will be presented at the 31st European Congress on Obesity from 12 to 15 May, in Italy, suggests that obesity in childhood is associated with a double the risk of multiple sclerosis in early adulthood.

The study authors explain that having a high body mass index in pre-adolescence increases the risk of developing multiple sclerosis by 2.3 times. To reach this conclusion, researchers analyzed data from 21,000 children with an average age of 11 years at the start of obesity treatment.

Scientists followed the volunteers between 1995 and 2020, comparing their health data with that of the general population. During this phase, 0.13% of young people developed multiple sclerosis compared to 0.06% of the general population.

According to experts, pediatric obesity is associated with a persistent low-grade inflammatory state in the body, which may be a trigger for the development of multiple sclerosis. “There are several studies that show that MS has increased over several decades and obesity is believed to be one of the main drivers of this increase,” they say in a press release.

Scientists excluded data from patients who had genetic relationships that could justify the onset of the disease.
