The Municipal Health Department (SMS), Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) and World Mosquito Program Brasil (WMP Brasil) begin, this Tuesday morning, another stage of the expansion of the Wolbachia Method in the city of Rio. The technology has been shown to be effective in reducing cases of dengue, zika and chikungunya. Starting this week, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with the Wolbachia bacteria (Wolbitos) will be released in the Center, Caju and Ilha de Paquetá.

The method consists of inserting the bacteria into the eggs of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes created in the laboratory. Released in nature, they reproduce and end up passing the bacteria to new insects.

The bacteria, which is present in 60% of animals in nature, but absent in Aedes aegypti, prevents the insect from transmitting arbovirus viruses and the tendency is that, with natural reproduction, the mosquito population in local areas is gradually replaced by mosquitoes unable to cause disease.
