DGetting more sleep on the weekends and catching up on sleep can reduce the risk of depression. The conclusion is from a study carried out by Central South University, in China, which will be published next June in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

According to the website The Healthy, the sleeping habits of almost eight thousand people were analyzed. According to research, those who slept more hours on the weekend ended up experiencing relief from depressive symptoms.

They explain that the difference is two hours more compared to the normal period of sleep during the week. After these hours, no benefits were found. In fact, more than five hours even showed an increase in depressive symptoms.

They explain that men over 65 can benefit most from this practice. However, nothing is yet certain. “More research is needed to investigate the existence of a difference between the sexes and elucidate the underlying physiological mechanisms”, reveal those responsible for the study.
