Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia and represents between 60% and 70% of diagnosed cases, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The disease, in which three stages of progression are distinguished, has as its first and main symptoms memory failures, lack of concentration and attention, something that worsens as cognitive degeneration progresses and influences the patient’s reasoning and behavior.

According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, it is now known what is the first thing that people with Alzheimer’s forget. Because it is a pathology whose development is very slow, patients with this disease forget normal, everyday events that are closer in time, such as not remembering having gone shopping, what they ate or whether they drank water.

“Early signs include difficulty remembering recent events or conversations, but gradually memory worsens and other symptoms develop as the disease progresses,” say the experts. Asking the same question several times, which has already been answered, is also a clear indication, as for people with Alzheimer’s it is as if they were asking it for the first time.

A study by the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Group at the Barcelona Science Park found that these people more easily forget words that mean objects compared to words that are used to refer to living beings.

The first thing that Alzheimer’s patients forget are the closest daily events in time.

Therefore, it is more likely that the person will have greater difficulty remembering words related to utensils or tools, such as spoon or screwdriver, and means of transport, such as plane or train, than words used to refer to animals. or plants, such as cat or artichoke.
