Patients who recovered movement after neurological surgeries share experiences

Two patients with similar stories met, unscheduled, at a return appointment at the Central State Hospital – Dr. Benício Tavares Pereira (HEC), in Vitória. Both are patients who celebrate the positive results of their neurosurgical procedures, which guaranteed the recovery of movements lost for months due to spinal problems.

These are the stories of Lucinéia Maria Pereira, 58 years old, and Camila da Ressureição, 35 years old, operated on by neurosurgeon Fabrízio Isaac Schwab Leite — one five months ago and the other just over 20 days ago, consecutively.

The first of them to operate, Lucineia Pereira, performed a spinal decompression to correct an injury in the cervical region. She entered the hospital in October without moving her legs. Now, she celebrates the joy of having all her movements restored. “I arrived at the hospital supported by two people and used a wheelchair for a year and a half. I had the surgery in one afternoon, the next day, in the morning, my legs were already moving,” she says.

“When I arrived, I had no hope of getting well. But today, I came here from the bus stop walking, I came for pleasure, I want to walk”, added Lucineia Pereira.

Camila da Ressureição underwent a procedure called Arthrodesis, to align the region of the spine affected by an infection originating from a distant focus. Just 20 days after surgery, the patient also recovered much of her lost mobility.

She said she was even more motivated. She says that before the surgery she no longer had the strength to walk and was feeling hopeless. “My hope is returning, I was already without hope for anything. I’m slowly moving my legs, which I didn’t move anymore, I had no hope for anything. Now, I’m going to go back with all my plans again, go back to work, go back to raising my daughters. I have three daughters,” said Camila da Ressureição.

Doctor Fabrízio Leite highlighted that both had serious spinal problems and had very positive responses to their respective treatments. “They arrived with neurological sequelae that led to reduced muscle strength and, consequently, loss of movement. Their evolution was remarkable. It’s great to be able to find both of them in full recovery,” he commented.
