“This year, of the 86 municipalities that make up the health macro-region of Northern Minas, only Verdelândia has an average incidence rate of diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The other locations have a high or very high incidence rate”, said the coordinator of health surveillance and the Strategic Information Center for Health Surveillance (Cievs), at the Regional Health Superintendence of Montes Claros, Agna Soares da Silva Menezes.

Even with the dengue vaccine, Agna Soares reinforces that “municipalities and the population in general will not be able to give up on eliminating Aedes aegypti proliferation hotspots. This is because, in addition to dengue fever, the mosquito transmits several other diseases, including chikungunya, zika and yellow fever.”

According to SRS, the vaccines sent will be used to apply the first dose. Vaccines for the second dose – administered at an interval of three months – will be received later. Currently, children and adolescents between 10 and 14 years old are being protected, the age group with the highest number of hospitalizations due to the disease.

SRS detailed that the distribution of doses was determined according to three criteria: ranking of health regions and municipalities; required quantity of doses according to the availability predicted by the manufacturer and the calculation of the total doses to be delivered in a single shipment to the municipalities.

Data from SRS indicate that 73,741 cases of dengue were reported this year in the North of Minas, of which 16,243 were confirmed through laboratory tests. Eighteen deaths due to the disease have been confirmed and 19 are under investigation. The municipalities with deaths are:

  • Montes Claros and Januária: five in each
  • Bocaiuva: Three
  • Engenheiro Navarro, Salinas, Pirapora, Várzea da Palma and Buritizeiro: one in each

Regarding the serotypes verified, 96% of cases are type 1 and 4% are type 2, but the viral isolation test detected the circulation of dengue serotype 3 in Salinas.
