Powerful seed against cancer

A study conducted by researchers at Oregon State University, in the United States, brought promising discoveries about chia seedsknown for its numerous health benefits.

The advancement in plant science has been extensively documented in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science.

What is good for preventing cancer?

According to the study, the sizzle is not only beneficial to health due to its known characteristics, but also has highly sought-after properties for medicines that could treat various health conditions, such as cancer and hypertension.

Famous for being a superfood, the small grain then had its genome completely sequenced in the study, which opens doors to new research focused on optimizing its nutritional and therapeutic properties.

What are the benefits of chia?

In research carried out by the Oregon State University team, specific genes were identified in chia seeds that are directly linked to improvements in human nutrition.

Detailed genetic analysis revealed more than 29 genes associated with production of polyunsaturated fatty acidswhich are essential for cardiovascular health and prevent cerebrovascular accident (CVA). These acids also have anticancer properties.

Furthermore, scientists have identified 93 genes that contribute to the seed’s gelling properties. This is particularly interesting for the food industry, where these properties could end up being explored to create healthier products with innovative textures.

Health benefits of chia

After all, how can the chia genome sequence impact long-term health?

Sequencing the chia genome provides a deeper understanding of the capabilities of this seed.

A significant discovery was the presence of 2,707 genes that are highly expressed in seeds and that are likely involved in the creation of small bioactive protein-derived peptides.

These peptides have the potential to alleviate conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension when absorbed by the human body.

This places chia as a key element in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, going beyond its known nutritional properties.

How should chia be consumed?

Extremely versatile, the Chia seeds can easily to accompany various recipes.

It can be used in smoothies, yogurts, cereals, salads and soups. It is also common to make chia puddings by mixing the seeds with milk or vegetable milk and leaving them in the refrigerator until they acquire a pudding-like consistency. Another option is to include chia in bread, cake and cookie recipes to increase the fiber and nutrient content.

It is important to remember to hydrate the seeds before consuming them. This is because they absorb water and form a gel in the stomach, which can help with satiety and, ultimately, regulate intestinal transit.

Therefore, integrating chia into your daily diet can be an excellent way to promote a healthier lifestyle.
