It can be difficult to differentiate between a cold, a sinus infection or an allergy. A stuffy nose and headache are common symptoms in all three conditions, which can cause a lot of confusion for sufferers. However, recognizing the main differences is essential for adequate treatment. Follow the symptoms of each one below.

Sinusitis is inflammation of the nasal passages, caused by bacteria. Sinus congestion can result in a feeling of pain, “fullness,” and heaviness in the center of the face. The pressure or headache worsens when bending forward or when the patient lies down. Fever may or may not be present.

In some cases, sinusitis can also be caused by colds, allergies, and asthma. Typically, it requires the use of medication and if it lasts more than 10 days, antibiotics may be necessary.

► One cold common is a viral infection, which affects the nose and throat. Stuffy and runny nose, sore throat and headaches, as well as coughing and sneezing are the main symptoms. The disease is the result of viruses that cause inflammation of the membranes lining the nose and throat and usually disappears without treatment within 7 to 10 days.
